Where is bonas defeat gorge

The boulders in this section are absolutely massive. Once out of the gorge, we took some photos of the dam, then made our way back to our cars on the highway. For me, this adventure is a top personal favorite. I could write all day about what fascinates me down there, but none of those words could do it justice. All I can ever really say every time I successfully makes it through there is: Bonas Defeat ed. Ledbetter Creek Canyon, NC. How I Trained an Adventure Cat.

Like this: Like Loading The access boat ramp on Wolf Creek Lake is expected to be unusable after August 7. I was wondering what time of year you had hiked the gorge? I am trying to see if there is any rhyme or reason to the dam releases. Additionally, was there any kind of siren that sounded before the release?

IVR Jun no 10 is magical! Camp at the defeat on plastic sheets in sleeping bags temp was down to 8 degres that night one of the best trips. But after awhile they reduced the release from the dam above and things were over grown.

From the pics they appear to be doing more releases. Not many places in the east can compare. Bonas was a dog that chased a deer off the face of cliff that is in the is in the Tuckasegee gorge above Lil Canada and Wolf Creek lake. Cannistra Jun Having hiked the gorge 7 times ,and completing 3 times I can say without a doudt its beauty can distract you and one will forget just how dangerous it can be.

Jim Conniff Aug Great pictures - they really brought back some memories. I did Bonas Defeat twice in the early nineties and the second time through they opened the dam on us, splitting our group of four into two groups of two.

We barely got out of there I slipped and fell and ended up with a compressed vertebrae. Your warnings about it are right on the money, but it is absolutely beautiful. Jay Nov Thanks for posting the warning. I was considering a hike to Bonas Defeat. I'll now consider it to be a much more serious undertaking than I originally thought. Awesome, but one must be very cautious for it is very dangerous.

I hiked this back in with a group of 6 guys I was the only girl on this particular trip. Trekked up this beauty from the powerhouse.

Plan to do this hike again, done this 8 times, it never stops amazing me. Like I stated earlier, much of the route I took this day with the exception of the trail down to the river involved bushwhacking, stream-walking, a good deal of scrambling, and traversing of high exposed ledges. A fall from any of the ledges in the inner gorge likely means death or at the very least a very, very, very long wait for help I didn't see a single other person the day I went.

So, all that said this was a pretty successful first-attempt at exploring Bonas Defeat Gorge. I certainly learned quite a bit about what the terrain is like just as gnarly as I was led to believe! Unfortunately I wasn't able to traverse the entire length of the gorge on this trip.

Only the lower half of the gorge. You ever heard the phrase 'caught between a rock and a hard place'? Well, as you'll see in the album that's exactly where I ended up. I'll just let the pictures speak for me At long last, I present, Bonas Defeat Gorge!!!!! Trailhead GPS Coordinates:
