To keep you up to date, here's a rundown of every series regular who has left — and the reasons behind their departure. After allegedly using a homophobic slur on set and then again backstage at the Golden Globes, Isaiah Washington publicly apologised for his "unfortunate use of words". It wasn't enough to stop him getting written out of the show at the end of season three, although he did return for one episode in season ten as part of Sandra Oh's exit.
After three seasons as Addison Montgomery, Kate Walsh left Grey's Anatomy to lead spin-off show Private Practice , appearing on that show for all of its six seasons and making guest appearances on Grey's until season eight. It was originally reported that TR Knight left the show because he came out as gay following Isaiah Washington's alleged slur, but he insists that had nothing to do with it.
Looking back, I learned so much and it was so valuable," he explained. If you ask Brooke Smith, she would claim that she was written out because her character was in a same-sex relationship with Callie Torres Sara Ramirez. However, Shonda Rhimes responded that they just "did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run". Officially, Katherine Heigl left to focus on her family , but her exit came after a much-publicised controversy when she withdrew from the Emmy race because she didn't think her season five "material" warranted a nomination.
She returned for season six, lasting until episode 18 until she exited. Having been made a series regular in season four, Chyler Leigh's Lexie Grey was tragically killed off in the season eight finale. But it was Leigh's decision to leave and she knew before the season started. The exit of Kim Raver's Teddy Altman in the season-eight finale surprised everyone, but it was just because Raver's contract was up and "she was ready to give Teddy Altman a much-needed vacation", according to Shonda Rhimes.
Fortunately, Teddy returned in season The plane crash that killed Lexie Grey also marked the end for Eric Dane's Mark Sloan, although he at least appeared briefly in season nine. His exit though was so he could lead new show The Last Ship. I would have done it until the final episode, but this was something I couldn't pass up. Having been on the show since the beginning, Sandra Oh exited at the end of season ten and it was entirely her decision.
Lexie was trapped under a piece of the aircraft. She spent her final moments with Mark before passing. I wanted to take a moment to honor and acknowledge PrideMonth. To me, Pride represents standing up for yourself and those around you, embracing self-love, and wearing your stripes proudly. I want to thank the incredible community of LGBTQ individuals and allies for being who you are and doing what you do.
Like many in the LGBTQ community, I've had my fair share of challenges around my identity and how I fit into the world, and at times I've felt that I couldn't speak my truth. But I've learned that it does get better. Living with bipolardisorder has helped to teach me that. Some days are going to be hard. And that's ok. But the more I can remind myself that I'm proud of who I am and how far I've come, and the more I speak up about the support I need and all the things that make me me, whether that's with my family, friends or all of you — the more good days I have.
I mean, I cried for hours after we had finished filming, just letting it go. It's letting go a part of yourself, but I think it was handled really well. I thought it was a beautiful way to go. In other words, it looks like Leigh's "Grey's Anatomy" departure was an amicable one, despite how heartbreaking it was for fans of the series at the time. Fortunately, the lingering heartbreak of Lexie's death was softened a little recently, when Leigh made a surprise return appearance on "Grey's Anatomy" earlier this year.
